Beyond Homelessness: Addressing the Needs of LGBTQIA+ Youth

by Voice Of Shava on March 12, 2024
It's a sad reality that LGBTQIA+ youth are significantly overrepresented in the homeless population. Some studies estimate that up to 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQIA+. Family rejection, discrimination, mental health issues, and lack of social support all contribute to the heightened risk of homelessness among this group.

Simply providing shelter beds is not enough. We must address the unique challenges and psychosocial needs of LGBTQIA+ youth if we want to create meaningful change. Here are four key areas community organizations and policy makers should prioritize:

1. Affirming Environments

LGBTQIA+ youth need access to shelters, group homes, and transitional housing programs that are affirming of their identities. This means employing staff who use correct names/pronouns, having anti-discrimination policies in place, and ensuring privacy and safety. Gender-inclusive facilities, like rooms not assigned by sex or bathrooms with single stalls, also allow gender diverse youth to feel comfortable.

2. Tailored Mental Health Services

LGBTQIA+ youth face added stressors like family rejection, discrimination, and identity struggles. Providing counseling from LGBTQIA-aware therapists and peer support groups creates essential community connections and teaches healthy coping strategies. Suicide risk is tragically high among LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing homelessness. We must prioritize access to quality, identity-affirming mental health care.

3. Life Skills & Job Training

Many LGBTQIA+ youth are forced out of their homes before they finish high school or develop independent living skills. Community organizations can help close these gaps through targeted services like medical/financial literacy workshops, one-on-one case management, GED completion courses, and career training programs. The goal is to empower youth on their path to self-sufficiency.

4. Permanent Housing Solutions

For youth with more complex needs, critical time-limited interventions like emergency shelter stays and transitional housing programs are not sufficient. We need major investments in long-term housing assistance programs for LGBTQIA+ youth, including subsidized apartment units, shared housing models with case management support, landlord incentives, and rent vouchers. Preventing returns to homelessness and providing a stable place to call home must be the end goal.

The Bottom Line

Support for homeless LGBTQIA+ youth cannot end at temporary shelter. By building affirming, youth-centered programs that allow for healthy identity development, provide mental health care, teach life skills, and expand access to safe housing, we can begin reversing the overrepresentation of LGBTQIA+ youth in the homeless population. Each young person deserves a fair chance at a bright future, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s time we come together to make it a reality.
