Promoting Inclusivity: Allyship and Visibility in the Workplace

by Voice Of Shava on January 25, 2024

You know, we’ve been on this journey to make our workplace a home where everyone feels welcome. We're doing pretty well, but guess what? We’ve still got some mountains to climb. Today, I want to chat about something close to my heart: making our bi colleagues and those who vibe with gender-neutral pronouns feel truly included.

Bisexuality in the Spotlight

Okay, let's talk about bisexuality. It’s Bisexuality Awareness Week and Pride Month, and it's the perfect time to bring this into the spotlight. Our bi colleagues sometimes face this weird thing called bi-erasure, or people just get the wrong idea about them. We’ve got to change that. How? By weaving their stories and experiences into our diversity training. Let's open the floor and really get the conversation rolling about bisexuality. It's all about understanding each other better, right?

Gender-Neutral Pronouns: More Than Just Words

Moving on to pronouns – they're small but mighty! When we use 'they/them' or 'ze/zir,' it's not just about words. It’s about making everyone feel seen. Here’s what we can do:

  • Kick off some cool orientation sessions about why these pronouns rock.
  • Get creative with pronoun stickers for our name tags or email signatures.
  • Make sure our diversity training spells out how important this stuff is.

Building Inclusive Policies

And now, the biggie: our workplace policies. We need to keep beefing them up to make sure they’re shouting inclusivity from the rooftops. That means things like health benefits that understand everyone's needs, unisex facilities (because why not?), and making sure everyone gets a fair shot at climbing that career ladder. Regularly checking these policies keeps us on our toes and ensures we’re always on the right track.

It Takes a Village (or an Office)

Creating this kind of environment isn’t a one-person show. It takes every single one of us, from the big bosses to the interns, to make it happen. When we focus on including these aspects in our day-to-day, we’re not just supporting our LGBTQIA+ pals; we're building a workplace that's all about respect and understanding.

What We Take Away

So, what's the takeaway from our little chat? Simple:

  • Every voice in the LGBTQIA+ family deserves to be heard loud and clear.
  • The words we use and the policies we make can really shape our work life.
  • Being an ally isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s a lifelong gig.
  • It's up to all of us, bosses and buddies alike, to keep learning, supporting, and advocating.

By focusing on these things, we're not just creating an awesome place to work. We're laying the groundwork for a world that's kinder, fairer, and just downright better.
